NASBE Reacts to NCLB Waivers Announcement

Arlington, VA — A statement by Jim Kohlmoos, Executive Director of the National Association of State Boards of Education, on the announcement that Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee were granted waivers from provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB):

“States and state boards of education are at the fore of innovation in education as they continue to develop and improve policies to help every student become college- or career-ready. It is heartening to see the Administration recognizes this hard work by starting to relieve states of the burden imposed on them by a law that set out worthy but perhaps unrealistic goals.

“However, make no mistake that while we are pleased that waivers were granted for these 10 states, what we need is a comprehensive new iteration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. State boards are constantly looking for new and better ways to improve the way education is delivered in their states. Right now, many facets of NCLB just get in the way of these critical efforts.

“We trust in the equity and transparency of waiver award decisions, and believe that any state whose application was denied should receive the assistance necessary to meet the requirements laid out in the waiver process.”

Jim Kohlmoos Arrives as NASBE’s Executive Director

Arlington, VA — A statement by Jim Kohlmoos on the start of his career as Executive Director of the National Association of State Boards of Education:

“I am excited about stepping into my new role as NASBE’s Executive Director, and grateful to my predecessor, Brenda Welburn, for the legacy of excellence she left behind. From that foundation we start a new chapter of working to strengthen this and future generations of state education policymakers. I also want to emphasize that the role of citizens in education governance and policy is not only a long American tradition, it is critical to ensuring the broad support and continual improvements our public education system needs to succeed for all students—and NASBE will not waver from its mission of vigorously promoting and assisting our lay leadership.

“We live in an era of improvements and innovations in K-12 education, and state boards should and will continue to be a catalyst of these efforts. I look forward to working closely with our members and partners in this common cause.”

NASBE Statement on the State of the Union Address

Arlington, VA — A statement by Gayle Manchin, President of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE), on President Barack Obama’s 2012 State of the Union address:

“We are pleased education was a significant piece of President Obama’s State of the Union address last night. It is important to keep the focus on education as a key domestic policy issue, as high-quality public education is a critical link in making sure America’s industry and citizens are equipped to remain competitive in the global economy. The federal government must recognize, however, the lead role of the states in education reform and the central role they play in education policy. States are the catalysts for innovation in public education, and state boards are responsible for adopting and implementing effective policies nationwide."

"Now, it is time for the federal government to renew its partnership with states to ensure they are successful in meeting the overall needs of our nation’s students in a global economy. We look forward to exploring new ways we can promote and continue innovation in our schools.”
